Friends of Kirn Appeal
Dear Friends of Kirn,
Once more the year has flown past and 2017 has certainly been a very busy one for EnviroKirn A.G. There were some changes to our Committee as some of our wonderful members had to step down due to work or family commitments. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped over the years to make our group so successful. Fortunately, there were a few enthusiastic residents who stepped into the breach and helped us regroup.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of sufficient volunteers, we were unable enter this year’s Beautiful Scotland competition. The criteria for Beautiful Scotland is very specific. The judging covers Horticultural Achievement; Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation. Each year we are expected to sustain the previous year’s performance and grow across the criteria with new and innovative projects. This year it was a struggle to maintain Kirn’s horticultural achievement at the Silver Award level gained in 2016. Luckily, with the help of many young groups in the community, we were able to extend our planting schemes beyond the esplanade and reach further into Kirn. There has been extensive planting of the flower beds and planters around Kirn by volunteers of all ages, who kept working despite the weather. A big thank-you to all who helped to make a difference, especially Kirn Primary School pupils and pupils from DGS Hostel who did beach cleans and Litter picks.
With your donations last year, we have also been able to tackle several large projects. We increased the number of self-watering planters available to the Friends of Kirn who Adopted a Planter. Also new information lectern depicting Kirn Past and Present was installed in the shore gardens.
As with any area, there are always things needing improvement and we rely on your financial support to make a difference. Your generous donations help make Kirn a nicer place to live so please help by donating to our cause. We can claim Gift Aid on your donations. To enable this please complete the declaration on the reverse of this letter. This can add an additional 25p onto every £1 you donate, at no extra cost to yourself.
On the reverse of this letter, you can also volunteer to help EnviroKirn if you wish and we are always grateful for any help at litter picks, beach cleans, planting, etc. Any ideas of how to improve Kirn are also most welcome. We really want as many people as possible to get involved.
Thanks are also due to the local businesses that support us throughout the year with their time, free labour, equipment hires, etc. We are also very grateful to the kind customers who pop their change into the collection box in the Variety Store! It all adds up.
Keep up to date with our activities on Facebook and through our newsletter and web page.
With our sincere thanks and best wishes.

Moving to Kirn…….
My husband and I moved to Kirn on a very wet and cold February day in 2017.
Although we had visited Scotland many times neither of us had ever been to this area before. After a week’s holiday here, we both fell in love with the place and decided this is where our future would be. We went back and talked about it some more. With the final decision made, we sold our bungalow plus a business and within six months we were all here; lock, stock and barrel with our three dogs!
We moved from a large city in England, but we both felt that by relocating to Kirn, it would make such a massive improvement to our lives and wellbeing. Looking back now, it was a big step for us; leaving family and long-time friends behind, but a decision well worth taking with definitely no regrets – despite the constant Argyll rain!
From day one, we can honestly say we felt truly at home here. We love the ‘community feel’ we found ourselves in, and to us, Kirn has such a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Everyone has been so friendly to us ‘outsiders’ and the reception we have received made us feel so very welcome and accepted within this lovely community. We have found the location of Kirn ideal for all the amenities but due to its smaller size it still retains a village feel, which to us makes it a very special place to call ‘home’.
We joined EnviroKirn almost immediately after ‘setting foot’ in Kirn. This has significantly improved our social contacts and given us the opportunity to get involved with the many projects that are always on the go within the group. They do such a wonderful job around the village, constantly improving and enhancing the look of Kirn for us all to enjoy.
We both feel truly settled now and blessed with so many new Kirn friends.
Susan Bolland, Kirn.
